Commissioned by Kingston University
This piece was commissioned by Kingston University School of Music as part of a joint project with the Beijing Conservatoire of Music. It derives its title from the Confucian classic, "The Great Learning" in which the sage describes how to bring harmony through order, saying in particular that those who have power have a duty to use it wisely and with respect for those who do not. This seemed, at the time, a particularly apt message to be sending to my then employer, Edward Ho. The music is in eight sections and makes use of both heptatonic and octatonic scales.
