Intimate Counterpoint

1994

For: 2 Clarinets
Duration: 4 minutes

The first movement of Intimate Counterpoint was written as a wedding present for my agent Sean Rourke. The piece's theme is derived from the letters S-E-A-N-A-N-D-J-U-L-I-E converted to occupy the 12 chromatic pitches of the musical octave. The music intertwines lines weaving them around each other in an 'intimate counterpoint'. The second and third movements were added later to create a small suite of duos. The second alternates a recitative style idea with a more dynamic interrupting passage and the third movement explores an exuberant motif that grows from a trill into a cascade of sound.
