commissioned by Al Farabi Concerto for the Liverpool Philharmonic 10/10 Ensemble
This piece was first performed by the 10/10 Ensemble at Liverpool Hope University on March 3rd 2010 and given its second performance at the Wigmore Hall on March 5th. The composition was inspired by the singing of a Blackbird that had taken up residence on the balcony of a holiday house I rented in Cornwall in the spring of 2009. The exuberance and zest for life of the bird inspired the character of the music but the piece is not programmatic and does not seek to paint an exact picture. The Blackbird Sings is dedicated to Julia Munn and Oliver Butterworth, the brains behind Al Farabi Concerto and Musicstage Promotions. They are amongst my oldest and dearest friends and my most loyal supporters.
